I joined a German company. My German is B1 — good enough for emails, not fast enough for meeting German. Teams has a live captions feature, but translated captions require Teams Premium, which costs extra and requires admin approval. I found a simpler way that works right now, on any Teams account.
Microsoft Teams offers live captions as a built-in feature on most plans. You enable them during a meeting and they transcribe what's being said in real time. The problem: if your colleagues are speaking German and you understand English, the captions show German. No translation.
Microsoft does offer translated captions — but only on Teams Premium, an add-on plan that costs extra and requires your IT admin to enable it. For most employees, especially at international companies, this means waiting on an approval process or just not having the feature at all.
DBird is a Chrome extension that reads Teams' live captions and adds a translated line below each one in real time. It works on free Teams accounts, Microsoft 365 Basic, Business, and Enterprise plans alike — no dependency on Teams Premium or any Microsoft add-on.
The German caption appears as usual in Teams. DBird adds the English translation directly below it, per speaker, inside a floating chatbox in your browser. Nothing changes inside Teams itself — no bot joins, no meeting recording starts.
The thing that makes DBird genuinely useful in a fast-moving Teams meeting isn't just the translation — it's knowing who said what.
Every translated line is labelled with the speaker's name. When your manager raises a point and a colleague responds, you see two separate labeled blocks — not a single stream of text that blends everyone together. You know who made the decision, who asked the question, who you need to follow up with after the call.
For non-native speakers working in a second language, this changes everything. You can respond to the right person, address comments correctly, and participate actively instead of just nodding along. Speaker-by-speaker is the difference between passively observing a meeting and actually being part of it.
Every Teams meeting with DBird active creates a bilingual transcript — German original and English translation, labelled by speaker. It's stored locally on your device (not in Microsoft's cloud), private and always accessible regardless of your Teams plan.
The chatbox also has a built-in notetaker panel. While the meeting is running, click the pencil icon to open a notes panel alongside the captions — type action items, decisions, or questions as they come up. Notes are saved with the transcript and timestamped automatically.
After the meeting, generate an AI summary in English directly from the transcript page. You get a structured overview of what was discussed and decided — no need to re-read the full conversation. Copy it into an email or share it with colleagues who weren't on the call.
DBird translates using Chrome's built-in on-device AI. All translation happens locally — no data leaves your machine. Supported languages include:
Real-time German ↔ English translation on Microsoft Teams. No Teams Premium, no bot, no setup.
